Touting celery as “fresh as dew from Kalamazoo,” this city was known as the Celery Capital of the World during the last century’s early decades. Kalamazoo restaurants, of course, go way beyond promoting celery to satisfy patron hunger. Its diverse line-up of restaurants stretches from Asian noodle places to steakhouses. With four wineries in the area, Peterson & Sons Winery is the only one in Michigan producing wines with no preservatives added. Warner Vineyards offers tours and tastings, and its Waterworks Station Café features casual gourmet fare and deck seating overlooking the Paw Paw River. St. Julian Winery, founded in 1921, offers free tours and tastings. The Kalamazoo Brewing Company is Michigan’s oldest, largest microbrewery, while Kraftbrau Brewery and Winery has a large selection of hand-crafted European-style lager beers. Housed in the historic Peninsula Building, Old Peninsula Brewpub & Restaurant has casual fare for a night on the town or family dining, and its own signature rootbeer.
